LEFT DISABLED AFTER ACCIDENT ON HOLIDAY: I chose life and nobody can take that away from me

Maria Milosevic (33), 3 years after the accident in Tunisia that left her totally disabled.
I haven’t seen the daylight for years, I dream of travelling again.

First year after the accident I always thought that I should have died and not continue to live like this. Then I accepted myself and my condition. Now, when I see my closest family and friends I am happy to have survived.

This is how Maria begins her story for the national newspaper „Novosti“. Maria Milosevic (33), a teacher and translator of English language from Smederevo, Serbia, suffered severe spinal injury in a car accident on her honeymoon in Tunisa in 2014 which left her totally disabled.

Maria can’t move any part of her body , yet her mind, brain, strength and fearlessness start energy or any atom in your body hurling when you are close to her. 3 years after the accident, she does not burdens her mind with futile questions, regrets, trying to find a culprit for the moment which left this beautiful ambitious young woman totally disabled. As she says, she has not given her life up to hoping so much, but decided to make herself feel better.

From neck down I don’t feel anything, I don’t feel touch, either hot or warm. I’m totally dependent on the other persons 24/7. I can’t be left alone for 5 minutes. I dream of drinking by myself, to be able to scratch myself… Yet, when I look at myself a few months after the accident and now, nobody can tell me this is the end, you are in bed and accept that as it is. I don’t want to think like that – begins her story Maria.

Upon returning from their holiday trip in Tunis in July 2014 with her husband Ivan Vasić, jeep with Serbian tourists crashed due to the reckless driving of the Tunisian citizen. Out of 7 tourists, Ivan was badly hurt with multiple fractures of his left arm. Maria’s injuries were such that the first battle was to survive. Complete spinal-cord, fracture of 3rd and 4th cervical vertebra. She was operated in Tunisia and treated for half a month there, then 8 months in military medical Academy in Belgrade, 5 months in hospital in her hometown and 3 months in the special hospital for the rehabilitation.

Life has chosen Maria and she could not look back. Her day started when she uttered the 1st word and took first breath on her own.

– I was dependent on mechanical ventilation for months as my lungs didn’t function at all. I was told that I would never be able to breathe on my own and that I should be discharged from hospital with the mechanical ventilation – Maria tells her six-month agony in the intensive care unit.

Maria has words of praise and enormous gratefulness to Dr Đorđević, medical director of the Anaesthesiology ward at Military Medical Academy in Belgrade, as he was the one to make her breathe on her own.

– Doctors literally taught me to breathe breathe on my own. First I was taken off the ventilator for 5 minutes and then 10. When I was able to breathe for half-an-hour, I was told I would be able to breathe the whole day. That was a true hell. While I was on the ventilator I could hear myself breathing and when I was taken off, I had panic attacks as I didn’t know if I breathe or not – she remembers the hardest moments of her recovery.

Maria and her husband live in a house that they built adapted to her needs. She has a ceiling lift so she could be transferred to the wheelchair and the lift was engineered by their friend. A trained caretaker is always by her side. They had to buy wheelchairs in which she could adapt the back seat and also stand-up as this is important for the blood circulation and blood pressure.

She hasn’t seen her hometown for over 3 years and dreams of travelling again every night. She doesn’t go out as the reason is that there are no suitable vehicles for her wheelchair in her hometown.

All of this did not stop this brave woman in her attention to live and as she says, nobody can take that away from her. Love and support of family and friends make her stronger day by day but not just that. Maria also works and makes money.

– I translate and I use American speech recognition software. I don’t get paid so much but I feel much better as I am useful and I contribute. Everything I earn I put that aside for my recovery –

Maria has contacted a number of centres in the region on Europe but they do not have proper conditions for her or she was turned down because of the tracheostomy tube. That’s when the calculation starts. She needs about €30,000 for 1st stem cell treatment in Russia and for every other about €6500. A one-year rehabilitation is also quite expensive and she hopes that one day she will stay in the specialised spinal-cord recovery centre in the USA (such as Project walk, Next Step etc), with total costs estimated to be about $100,000. Funds are being raised on numerous ways and 1 of them by sending SMS message. And the calculation is like this – if 100,000 people sent one message each, Maria’s life dream would be accomplished.

  • We have the problem to get the indemnification money from the agency in Tunis. Unequivocally, the agency’s driver’s guilty of reckless driving but we still haven’t got anything. They even asked us to travel to Tunisia for reassessment of my medical conditions even though the doctors there had already examined me and confirmed my diagnose of tetraplegia. I sent emails to the Tunisian embassy in Belgrade to ask for help. I also ask my country of Serbia to help in anyway. If I could manage to charge the damage, I would be able to go on a rehabilitation immediately and I wouldn’t have struggle like this and beg for money.

From Honeymoon To Recovery Room

We would hereby like to ask you to help Maria Milosevic from Smederevo, Serbia in her further treatment and rehabilitation abroad.

Marija Milosevic is an English teacher and sworn in translator who had a future ahead of her. She was offered a well-paid job and accommodation in Norway and her husband Ivan Vasić, NCR employee, and Maria were supposed to travel to live there. However, 10 days before their scheduled flight for Norway, their dreams shattered into pieces. Maria suffered a severe fracture of her spine (3rd and 4th cervical vertebra) in a car accident on her honeymoon in Tunisia. The accident left her totally paralysed from the neck down without any sensations and with numerous health problems. For couple of months she couldn’t breathe on her own and was on mechanical ventilation. She couldn’t swallow, eat, sit nor talk. Due to paralysed breathing muscles, now she has an artificial opening in her trachea (tracheostomy tube) so that she can breathe easily and clean lungs as she is not able to cough. Apart from being unable to move arms or legs, she is not able to control bladder or intestinal function. She has numerous respiratory problems and infections.

Hope for her recovery lies in intensive physical therapies and epidural stimulation with stem cell transplantation. Physical therapies include functional electrical stimulation, walking simulation in exoskeleton (Lokomat) and other types of intensive restorative physical therapy in 1 of the most advanced and modern equipped spinal-cord injury centres (found in the USA, Europe…). A lot of money is needed for her better condition and better life.

Maria works as well by using speech recognition software. She has worked for numerous companies, governmental bodies and authorities. She and her husband’s save money for her treatments but this is not enough. Major charity foundation in Serbia „Budi human“ also joined the action to raise money for her treatment and below you will find accounts for donations as well as SMS numbers for sending messages. You will also find links to Facebook page and charity page.

We would appreciate your help and spreading the word about our appeal.

We hope you would consider our appeal and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards

Maria Milosevic’s family
